Cody is an almost-5-year-old Chocolate Lab who is this month’s Pet of the Month because he is always such a good and funny boy. Owners Jamie and Tommy got him in October 2003 and trained him themselves, “through long hours of chewed up shoes and lots of laughs,” Jamie says. Chewed up shoes or no, they did a great job: Cody is very obedient and easy to work with. He always comes when called, even when we’re out in public, and he respects the boundaries set by his baby gates, even though he could easily bowl them over.
He wasn’t always a boundary-honoring kind of guy, though. Jamie says they used to call him Houdini because he could and would escape from any yard. “We had to use a video camera all day when we were at work because we couldn’t find out how he was escaping the yard. Turns out, Cody has rock-climbing/fence-climbing skills we underestimated.”
These days, Cody would rather play ball and go swimming than climb fences. There’s no question that all of his Labrador Retriever traits are perfectly intact. He will swim and/or retrieve balls all day long, if you’d let him. Every time I visit, he greets me with a ball in his mouth and an expectant look on his face. He’s always happy and always ready to play. But Tommy and Jamie’s favorite thing about him? “He’s so sweet and very smart!”
