From Beaks To Barks embraces the concept of Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive (LIMA) training. In other words, we should always strive to use the least amount of force, pain, intimidation and fear possible when we teach or train–which, in almost all cases, means we don’t have to use any at all. Although kindness towards all sentient beings is an admirable goal, it is only one of many reasons we should use LIMA when training.
In addition to being kinder, LIMA training is also as fast as possible, effective, empowering, and fun! For animals whose behaviors are based in an extreme emotional response – such as fear, frustration, anger, etc. – we can be much more effective at helping them to become calm, confident, and happy when we work to change the way they feel about the situation rather than focusing on suppressing their emotional outbursts. For animals who simply lack the basic skills we want them to have, we can be much more effective when we focus on teaching them what we want them to do rather than suppressing what we don’t want them to do.
Either way, the goal is not just making them behave the way we want them to, but also helping them become as mentally and emotionally healthy as possible. Healthy learners make happy families!
From Beaks To Barks also endorses and practices life-long continuing education. There is always more to learn and always room for improvement. To stop learning is to stagnate.
Behavior is a study of one.
From Beaks To Barks recognizes that every learner is unique and should be treated as such. For this reason, I am committed to working with you to find the best possible solution for you and your pet.
